Trick or Treat Reality Check

In preparation for Halloween I have stocked up on treat sized candy in all my favorite varieties.  Generally I go for the chocolate over the fruit flavors – think M&Ms over Skittles – but I’m not that discriminating, so given a free bag of Skittles…why not.  Scanning the ‘nutrition’ (or lack thereof) label on a 2 lb bag of Twizzlers, I was shocked to read that one innocent stick of licorice has 40 calories.  40 calories!  And it doesn’t even taste that good!  After mindlessly eating a full meal’s worth of Twizzler calories, I decided to do some research about the calorie content of the Halloween candy that I KNOW I would eat if it was in the house, and this is what I came up with:

25 small jellybeans                                                                140 calories
20 pieces of candy corn                                                        100 calories
2 Brachs caramels                                                                   80 calories
2 Hershey’s Kisses                                                                  50 calories
1 mini Tootsie roll                                                                   25 calories
1 Fun Size candy bar                                                               80 calories
(Snickers, Milky Way, Butterfinger)
1 mini bite-size candy bar                                                      55 calories
(Snicker, Milky Way, Butterfinger)
1 Fun Size M&M packet                                                         90 calories
(Plain or Peanut
1 mini Reese’s peanut Butter Cup                                          33 calories
1 full size candy bar                                                                275 calories
(Hershey’s, Snickers, etc.)
1 king size chocolate candy bar                                           500 calories
(Hershey’s Snickers, etc.)
SHOCKING!  It kind of takes the fun out of flinching mini candy bars from your child’s Trick-or-Treat bags while they are at school!  But if this information can save you from a sugar hangover or that guilty feeling when your favorite jeans are too tight, well then I have done my job.
Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!
